Linux Systems Engineer

Axcient, the leading provider of data backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery services to the SMB market, is looking for a Linux Systems Engineer to play a pivotal role in the development of linux components for Axcient's data protection and business continuity service.

We are seeking additional innovative linux systems engineers to join us on our mission to deliver leading-edge data protection & business continuity solutions that change the whole model of the way things have been done by the “Big Guys” of software and storage for the last 15 years.

Position Summary

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Linux Systems developer will play a pivotal role in the development of linux components for Axcient’s data protection and business continuity service.

Major Responsibilities

  • Participate in the architecture, design and development of secure, infinitely scalable, mission critical Cloud Computing and Storage components
  • Participate in the architecture and, if necessary, the design and development of proactive monitoring and alerting tools geared around 100% uptime for critical system components

Experience and Skill Set

The ideal candidate will have recent, demonstrated experience delivering robust, reliable linux systems software and drivers in mission critical datacenter environments.

Meaningful, recent development experience with most of the following is required:

  • Linux systems code development, including kernel components and drivers
  • Products deployed in extremely high availability 'six nines' data center environments
  • Large distributed file systems in the multi-petabyte range
  • Monitoring and alerting tools for ‘Zero down’ time linux environments
  • Linux applications running in VM environments
  • Cloud computing and storage

Optional, but highly desirable skill sets:

  • Shell scripting
  • Unit test frameworks in the linux environment
  • Experience with svn and jira

  • Technology Savvy - The ability to come up to speed quickly on new technologies relative to software in complex, non deterministic systems environment.
  • Personal Integrity & Initiative - A high-energy individual with sound judgment who is sensitive to the needs of a small and rapidly growing company. Key attributes are intelligence, loyalty, honesty, customer focus and being a team player. A self starter with high motivation to 'get the job done'.
  • Hands-on Orientation - Prepared to be involved in the hands on aspects of software development. Will ‘roll-up-the-sleeves’ and get things done without the assistance of a large supporting organization.
  • Excellent Problem Solving Skills - Ability to crack tough technical problems quickly when a solution is not immediately obvious. A combination of mental flexibility, creativity, analytical ability and sound judgment, which is required to develop and execute against seemingly intractable technical problems.

Educational Background

This position requires a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
